Description
The front boundary wall and gateway arch, located about 25 metres south of Whetstone's Almshouses, is likely from the 17th century. It is constructed of Ham stone ashlar and features a wall approximately one metre high, complete with a plinth and pitched top coping. The central raised gateway has an arch with a coping moulding that extends to the sides and head. The chamfered cambered archway contains a 20th-century timber gate. An inscription on the lintel reads, "THIS HOSE WAS FOVNDED BY JOHN WHETSONE GENTLEMAN/FOR THE RELEEFE OF THE PORE OF ILTON AND DNI 1615." This structure is an important part of the setting for Whetstone's Almshouses and serves as a significant element in the street scene.
