Description

Wayside is a detached cottage with origins dating back to the 15th century, which has been modified over time. It is constructed from local stone rubble, with some areas patched in roughly cut and squared lias stone. The cottage features a thatched roof with plain overhung gables and has brick chimney stacks at both ends and in the middle.

The building is single-storey with attics and consists of seven bays. The windows are rectangular-leaded timber casements installed in the mid-1980s, arranged in groups of 2, 4, 4, 3, 2, and 3 lights. Above the second and fourth bays, there are 3-light windows set into the thatch, with the window above bay 2 being an 18th-century window that includes a central iron-framed opening light. Bay 4 has an open timber and thatched porch with a 20th-century door. The north-west gable appears to be cob above the stonework, while the south-east gable is clad in timber.

Most of the significant work is found internally, where there is a cross-passage plan featuring plank and muntin partitions, a hall fireplace with a timber-framed smoke hood, and an early pointed-arched timber framed doorway. There is also ample evidence of jointed cruck construction, including smoke-blackened curved windbraces and wattle-and-daub partitioning. Additionally, there are signs of a likely curing chamber, and some internal wall faces may be made of cob.
