Description
Strodes Almshouses and The Bread House are almshouses built in 1862 by Wainwright and Heard. They are constructed from limestone rubble with freestone dressings and feature a slate roof with coped verges. The building has four brick chimneys with diagonally set shafts and is designed in a Tudor style. It consists of a row of four almshouses and the Bread House, all single storey with an attic, and each has a single bay. The main facade faces the rear of Church Lane and includes 2-light mullion windows, each with a depressed arch head. The first-floor windows are set in gables with parapets on shaped kneelers. Each door opening has a 4-centred arch in a moulded stone surround. A freestone tablet in the center of the frontage bears the raised inscription: "Erected by the Trustees of Strodes Charity 1862." There is a moulded stringcourse below the first-floor windows. The Bread House, which is at a right angle to the left side of the almshouses, is also single storey and features a 4-light mullion and transom window. The rear elevation facing Church Lane has four gables with 2-light dormers that correspond to those on the facade, and a Tudor arch doorway with a label.
