Description
Tarada Cottage and No. 488 North Street is a pair of cottages, originally four, built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from Ham stone in a near-ashlar style, with a shallow pitch roof covered in clay pantiles and stepped coped gables, along with brick chimney stacks. The building stands two storeys high and comprises seven bays in total.
The windows are mainly casement style, featuring slim three-light casements in bays one to four, although there is no window in upper bay three. The upper windows have two horizontal bars for the centre opening lights and three leaded bars for the sidelights. Bays five and seven contain two-light small-pane casements, all of which have gauged stone flat-arched heads for the lower openings.
In lower bay four, there is a mid-19th century shop front designed in a debased Regency style, which includes a panelled stable door to the left beneath a diamond-patterned rectangular fanlight. The shop window consists of 20 panes framed by slim timber side pilasters and a shallow fascia above. Lower bay six features a six-panelled door with a timber architrave. There are also traces of blocked doorways between bays one and two, and in lower bay three, which has been blocked by a matching casement window. The interiors have not been seen.
