Description

Cranford is a detached house, originally with a shop, that dates back to the 17th century and was modified and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from cut and squared ham stone and features a thatched roof with stepped coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The house has an 'L'-shaped plan and consists of two storeys with two bays, along with a two-bay extension. The windows are small-pane 3-light casements, with a 4-light window in the upper bay of the second storey. The lower windows have timber lintels, and there are signs of a blocked doorway between them. The extension has a Ludlow pattern concrete-tiled roof with a shallow pitch and a stepped coped south gable. It includes a 3-light matching casement in the upper bay and a part-glazed 19th-century door below, which has a timber architrave and a flat timber hood supported by wrought-iron brackets. The second bay features a shop front with two 16-pane windows and a blocked doorway between, partially filled with a window, slim side pilasters, and a plain fascia above. There is a lean-to against the south gable. A rear extension matches the main block and projects at the north-east corner, featuring casement windows on both levels. Additionally, there is a further projection from the centre of the rear elevation, which has a stepped coped gable, a gabletted finial, and segmental-arched casement windows. The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to have chamfered beams of probable early 17th-century date and indications of an original gable entry plan.
