Description

The Church of St George is an Anglican parish church located on a medieval site and was completely rebuilt in 1879 by Down and Son. It features coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, a 20th-century concrete tile roof, coped verges, cruciform finials, and a gabled ashlar bellcote on the west side. The church has a nave, chancel, south porch, and north vestry, designed in a Neo-Perpendicular style.

The nave consists of four bays with 2-light square-headed windows, each light adorned with cusping and labels that have large floral stops, along with a 3-light west window. The gabled porch has a door opening with a 4-centred head, and the interior includes benches on a tiled floor, with an inner door that features good hinges. The chancel, which has two bays in a matching style, includes a 3-light west window, a priest's door to the south, and another door with good hinges.

Inside, the church has a lofty plastered interior with tile and encaustic tile floors. The nave boasts a scissor-rafter roof supported by corbels, while the chancel has an unceiled wagon roof. The chancel arch is moulded and shafted. The furnishings include coeval pews, a pulpit, a lectern, choir stalls, brass candelabrae, an altar rail, and a small organ. There is a 19th-century reredos that appears to incorporate Jacobean elements, along with a Jacobean chest. The church also features a notable Norman font with a bowl that has two large scallops on each face, corner spurs, and two cable mouldings, topped with a fine late 19th-century cover. Additionally, there are five 19th-century wall monuments and four late 19th-century stained glass windows.
