Description
The socket stone of a wayside cross, dating from the medieval period, possibly the 14th century, is located at the south-west corner of a road junction in Over Stratton, South Petherton. Made of ham stone, the socket stone measures 600 millimeters by 600 millimeters and stands 420 millimeters high. It features traces of a chamfered plinth and has a socket on the top with a mortice that is 330 millimeters square and 150 millimeters deep, with the top corners broached. The stone is deeply embedded in the roadside verge, making the base not visible. This structure may have served as the base for one of the medieval crosses that were erected to mark the boundaries of the Yeabridge and Watergrove parishes.
