Description
The Royal Oak Inn is an inn that likely dates from the 18th century and has been modified over time. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone, with some ashlar dressings, and features a thatched roof with stepped coped gables. There are brick chimney stacks at both ends and in the middle of the building.
The inn is two storeys high and has six bays with irregular window arrangements. Most of the windows are three-light horizontal-bar casements, with timber lintels on the lower ones. The fifth bay has a three-light hollow-chamfer mullioned window set in a chamfered recess, complete with a label, while the sixth bay features a 12-pane sash window under a timber lintel. There are 20th-century doors to the right of the fourth and fifth bays; the door by the fourth bay is set in a deep recess and has a hanging sign on a braced wrought-iron bracket above it. Several openings in the first four bays have been blocked.
The south gable is plain, while the north gable has bonding timber along the floor line. There is a later 20th-century extension at the north-east corner of the building. The interior has not been seen.
