Description
The Cottage is a 17th-century cottage with later alterations, constructed from locally sourced lias stone that is cut and squared, and roughly coursed. It features a thatched roof with plain gables and has brick chimney stacks at both ends and in the middle. The building has two storeys with three bays and a single storey with an attic for two bays. It includes two-light casement windows of varying sizes and patterns, mostly with small panes. The window in the upper bay is set into the roof. Between bays one and two, there is a later pattern boarded door in a deep recess, while an earlier pattern boarded door with a heavy frame is located at bay four. All openings have timber lintels.
Although the interior was not seen, a report notes several interesting features in the single storey portion. These include remains of a hall, cross passage, and kitchen from a 16th or 17th-century house. The passage has a rising cobbled floor and a chamfered beam, while the hall contains a spiral staircase and a fireplace dating to around 1600. The kitchen features a stud and plank screen and various ceiling beams. Upstairs, there are wattle and daub partitions, but the roof has been rebuilt in the 19th century.
