Description
The Old Tavern is a 17th-century inn, now a house, located on the east side of Main Road in Compton Dundon. Constructed of local lias stone, cut and squared, it has a thatched roof with plain gables and stone end chimney stacks, with brick intermediate stacks. The building is arranged in an 'L' shape.
The two-storey facade has four bays, with 2- and 3-light casement windows containing small panes of glass. Bays four upper and three lower are blank, with louvred shutters to the lower windows. A boarded door with a large glazed panel is set beneath a semi-conical thatched hood.
A single-storey thatched extension projects from the north gable, possibly originally a separate shop. The north end of this extension is clad in elm weatherboarding, featuring a small door and a 9-pane bow window, with loft doors above.
The interior is not documented, but it is believed to contain a plank and muntin partition. The building was formerly known as the Hare and Hounds Inn.
