Description
No. 51 Downclose Lane is a cottage located at the end of a row, likely built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared ham stone and features a thatched roof. The roof has an abutment to the south and a stepped coped gable to the north, which includes a brick chimney stack. The cottage is two storeys tall with two bays. It has small-pane, three-light casement windows, with the upper window being very small. To the right of the second bay, there is a boarded door set in a heavy frame. The rear elevation is similar to the front. Although the interior has not been seen, it is probably little altered. Attached to the otherwise plain north gable is a 19th-century cast-iron direction sign that measures about 600 millimeters wide and 150 millimeters deep. The sign has a raised edge and rounded corners, and it reads 'Beaminster 6/Bridport 12'.
