Description

The Old Bakery and the adjacent house or houses to the north are a row of cottages that were originally three but now appear to be two. They date from the 18th century to early 19th century and are constructed from roughly cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings. The roofs are made of Welsh slate and feature stepped coped gables, along with brick chimney stacks.

The buildings are two storeys high and consist of four bays for the bakery cottage and two additional bays. The northern end bays are set higher than the others. The bakery cottage has a straight joint between bays three and four, with two-light horizontal-bar casement windows on the first floor of bays one, two, and three, and a 20th-century small-pane casement in bay four, which is set lower due to blocking that suggests it was once a shop window. On the ground floor, bay one has a three-light leaded casement with an iron-framed opening light under a segmental arched head. Bay two features a boarded door within a heavy frame, also in a segmental archway, while bay four has a boarded door in a flat arch to its left and a six-panel door to its right, which is in a beaded stone surround with a flat stone hood, accessed by three steps. Bays five and six contain three-light casement windows with timber lintels, all rectangular leaded except for the upper window in bay two, which has small panes.

A two-storey timber bay window that was mentioned in a previous listing description has been removed and was likely located in bay four. The interiors have not been seen. Extending from the right of the stone surround to the doorway in bay four is a wrought-iron railing with spearpoint heads, set on a stone curb, angled with the house and featuring a curved corner on the southeast. This railing encloses a trapezoidal garden, enhancing the setting of the group. Attached to the northern end of the group is No 51 Downclose Lane.
