Description

The John Kemp monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 2 meters south of the priest's door of the Church of St Michael. It dates from the early 17th century and is made from an unidentified stone. The tomb features a flat top with a steeply chamfered edge and consists of monolithic slabs on the north and south sides. The inscription, which has eroded over time, originally read: "Here lieth the body of John Kemp of Raddington buried the VI day of July 160-." The east and west ends of the tomb are open, with a stone lying nearby. This monument is a notable example of an early chest tomb, distinguished by its remarkably clear lettering.
