Unknown Monument In The Churchyard 14 Metres South Of Chancel Of Church Of St Peter

This is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, 14 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Peter. It dates from the 17th century and is made of dressed lias and Ham stone. The tomb has a classic oblong shape and rests on a moulded plinth, although the plinth was buried at the time of the re-survey in August 1984.

The chest features elaborate scroll decoration on both the east and west ends. The east end surrounds a clover-roof cross, while the west end has a blank oval panel. The south side is adorned with fluted end pilasters, and the north side has end pilasters with cherubic heads in relief. Between each pair of pilasters on the north side is a lias panel, which contains the remains of an inscription. The top of the tomb is a hipped slab with a cavetto moulding around its lower edge.
