Description
Ditcheat House, also known as Ditcheat Manor, is a manor house that has been divided into flats. It dates from the early 17th century, with some alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries, and further work in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed and squared rubble, with some ashlar stone, coped verges, and tile roofs, featuring brick stacks. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a five-bay front with a one-bay projection. The windows are all 2-light stone-mullioned with ovolo-moulded iron casements and square-paned lead lights. Continuous weathered strings are raised over the window heads, and there are gabled attic dormers on each side, also with 2-light stone-mullioned windows and labels, topped with good large pierced finials.
The house features a projecting two-storey gabled porch with a window on the first floor, a label, and a finial. The freestone doorcase has a semi-circular head with a key and imposts, a square frame, and carved spandrels, leading to a studded inner door. The rear elevation is irregular, with similar windows, five large gables, moulded copings, and stall ball finials. Inside, there is a panelled solar on the first floor and a ground floor with a 17th-century chimneypiece featuring carving and a painted overmantel. Additional interior features include ornamental plasterwork, doors, and fireplaces. A notable staircase has carved baluster panels and square newels, with pendants leading off the hall to the rear.
