Description

The Standerwick family monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, about 500 millimetres south of the nave of the Church of St Aldhelm and St Eadburgha. Dated 1616, it is made of Ham stone and features a flat top, a thick slab, a chamfered cornice, and a plinth. The tomb is inscribed on all sides with details about members of the Standerwick family. The north side commemorates John Standerwicke, Gent, who was buried in 1616, his brother Richard, who was buried in 1581, and John Standerwicke, Cloyther, who died in 1653. The east face states, "Set by John Standerwicke, Cloyther, 1616." This monument is a rare and interesting example of a chest tomb that records the date of its erection.
