Description

Everys Almshouses are almshouses dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, which were restored and extended at the rear around 1958. They are constructed of dressed Ham stone and feature a double Roman tiled roof with a catslide at the rear, coped verges, and rebuilt stone stacks with cavetto cappings. The original plan included seven one-up-one-down units.

The building is two storeys high and has a facade with a pattern of 1:2:2:1:1 bays. The first floor has 2-light hollow chamfer Ham stone leaded casements, while the ground floor features similar 3-light windows with a continuous string hood-mould. There are three Tudor-arch openings leading to internal porches, each with plank doors opening to the left and right, and a square-headed plank door in the penultimate bay on the right. The returns and rear elevation are rendered and include 20th-century artificial stone casements without leading. Although the interiors were not seen, they are said to contain original circular stairs.

According to his will dated December 25, 1588, Alexander Every left £100 for the construction of seven almshouses in Broadway to accommodate seven poor men. In 1853, the property was conveyed to Chard District Council but was repurchased by the Trustees in 1958 to allow for modernization. The current accommodation consists of three two-bedroom dwellings and one single-bedroom dwelling.
