Description

The Manor House is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with possible earlier origins. It has been altered in the 19th century, including a reroofing and raising of the roof over two bays at the east end of the facade, as well as the addition of a porch. Buildings to the east were demolished, and an outshot was added or rebuilt in the 1930s. The structure is constructed of random rubble local stone, featuring a concrete lintel with cambered brick heads above two window openings to the left of the porch. The roof has coped verges and is covered with plain slate tiles. There are roughcast stacks at the gable ends and to the left of the through passage.

The plan consists of three cells and a cross passage with an outshot at the rear. The house has two storeys and is arranged in a 2:2 bay configuration, with all windows being three-light leaded steel casements. The gabled porch, located second from the right, has a Tudor-arch head opening. To the left of the 20th-century door with sidelights is a carved piece of stone with an incised spandrel and a pointed arch opening.

Inside, the through passage has been widened at the expense of the lower end, which is now a dining room featuring a modern grate. The hall has a moulded six-panel compartment ceiling and a chamfered lintel above the stack in the through passage. There are remains of earlier stairs set against the rear wall, complete with a moulded handrail and straight string. In the bedroom above the hall, there is a notable depressed Tudor arch head stone chimneypiece with incised spandrels. A reproduction photograph of the property shows the farmhouse around 1910, prior to the 1930s alterations.
