Description

Church House, originally a Congregational chapel, dates from 1739 and 1870 and was being converted into a dwelling at the time of the survey in December 1985. The building features squared and coursed ashlar stone, with random rubble at the rear and on the rear portions of the returns, and has a bitumenized slate roof. The facade has a coped gable with a ball finial. The plan is rectangular with a gable end facing the road. It is two storeys tall and includes a lunette in the gable end and a datestone below. The windows are semi-circular-headed, mullioned, and transomed, with hoodmoulds. The original stone window in the center has been renewed or replaced with wooden windows in the outer bays. On the ground floor, there are two three-light stone mullioned and transomed windows with hoodmoulds, as well as two cambered-headed doorways in the outer bays, one with a glazed door and the other with a plank door. The interior was not seen but is believed to have been gutted and remodelled.

The wall and railings with gatepiers are from the 19th century and were restored in the late 20th century. The wall is made of squared and coursed ham stone with flat stone coping and is semi-circular in plan with central gates. The wall fronting the road sweeps down and returns in a semi-circle as a dwarf wall with saddleback coping. The renewed iron railings are attached to double gates with urn finials. The site is significant for its group value, occupying a prominent position in the middle of the village.
