Description

Shatterick is a farmhouse that has been converted into a dwelling. It likely dates from the late medieval period, with a ceiling added in the 16th century and an outshot added in the 18th century. The building is constructed of squared and coursed Ham stone, with quoins, random rubble returns, and chert in the outshot. The original rear wall is made of cob, and the roof is covered with double Roman tiles, featuring cooed verges with kneelers. There is a brick stack extending over the ridge between the first and second bays, and a tall brick stack rises from the outshot on the loft return.

The structure is an open hall house that has been ceiled to create two cells and a cross passage. The hall has been subdivided, and an inserted stack is present in the outshot addition. The building has two storeys and four bays, with 3-light casements. The ground floor openings have wooden lintels, and the entrance is located in the second bay on the left, featuring a 20th-century pointed arch doorframe and door. There is a plank door in the end bay on the right.

Although the interior was not seen, it is said to contain evidence of smoke-blackened jointed crud trusses. A timber-framed partition has a blocked depressed 4-centre arch doorway, with a facsimile inserted in the passage wall leading to the former kitchen. This kitchen features chamfered beams, one with step and run-out stops, and a cloam oven on the outshot side to the left of the fireplace, with a probable site of a bacon curing chamber against the front wall. There is also a doorway to the rear of the through passage with a shaped head.
