Description

The Broadway War Memorial is a First World War memorial created by stonemason A Ruscombe Emery, dating from around 1921. It was altered after the Second World War to honor those lost in that conflict.

The memorial is constructed from local stone and stands approximately 3.5 meters high. It features a cross with chamfered arms and flared ends, set on a tapering shaft. This shaft is mounted on a square plinth, which is inscribed with the words "IN MEMORY OF / THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / AND OF THE MEN / FROM THIS PARISH / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE," along with the names of the Fallen, which are inscribed beneath Maltese crosses on the side faces. The plinth is positioned on a four-stepped platform, with the uppermost step inscribed "2ND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945," along with the name of the serviceman who fell in that conflict. The inscriptions are highlighted in black paint.

The memorial is located in a reserved semicircular gravelled area, with the roadside boundary wall curving around it. At the front, four stone posts topped with domed finials serve as the supports for a chain-link fence.
