Description

Horton Cross Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse that may have been remodeled in the 17th century from an earlier structure. It is built of ham stone near-ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with a coped west gable and a plain overhang to the east, along with stone slab and brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays. It includes a plinth and ovolo mould mullioned windows set in wave-mould surrounds, with a continuous label at the lower level that steps up over each opening and separate labels above. The windows are three-light above and four-light below. Between bays two and three, there is a cambered-arched doorway with a boarded door. The east gable appears to have been rebuilt, while the west gable has two two-light windows above and below two stairlights, one at mezzanine level. There is a long extension to the rear that is set lower and has hollow-chamfer mullioned windows in chamfered recesses. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a three-room cross passage plan with a former rear stair turret, some ceiling beams, an 18th-century frieze in ornamental plasterwork, cornices, and sling-braced collar trusses. The long rear range may include earlier work. Surrounding the front garden is a matching stone wall that curves from the southwest corner of the house, averaging one metre high, with step-and-roll angled coving. The central gateway is now sealed off, which enhances the setting of the house.
