Description

Sheppards Barton comprises parallel terraces of houses built in the mid-18th century and remodelled in the mid-19th century. The houses are two and a half to three storeys high. They are constructed of rubble with pantile roofs, with some mansard roofs. Most windows are sash windows, occasionally with glazing bars, with one window per floor on each house; a few are casement windows. The houses have mostly flush panelled doors, positioned irregularly, some of which are paired. A late-19th century cast-iron pump is set within a brick niche located between numbers 4 and 5. Sheppards Barton is said to have been built for workers at Sheppards Lull. An archway, belonging to number 14 Catherine Hill, provides the northern entrance, with number 1A Sheppards Barton located beneath. These buildings form a significant group and are of added interest due to their connection to the industrial history of the area.
