Description

Abbey Tithe Barn, including the attached wall to the east, is located to the south-east of the Abbey grounds, at the corner of Bere Lane and Chilkwell Street. This 14th-century building is relatively small in scale, measuring approximately 100 feet long, but it showcases excellent architectural quality. It is an unaisled, cruciform structure with seven bays and features four gables adorned with traceried lights. The old tiled roofs have coped gable-ends supported by carved heads, and saddle-stones with carved standing figures and finials.

The main gable-ends are accentuated by central buttresses and triangular openings that include hoodmoulds and cusped tracery. There are two-light rectangular openings above depressed chamfered arches leading to porches, which also display animals on the side buttresses. Notably, the gable-ends feature excellent carved roundels depicting the symbols of the four Evangelists. The barn's walls are punctuated with slit openings that have wide splays inside, divided by buttresses with multiple set-offs. The roof is constructed with a two-tier cruck system and arched braces.

Additionally, there is a high crenellated wall made of rubble, attached to the north-east corner of the barn, which has a band and a crenellated top made of ashlar blocks. The barn is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
