Description

The wall around the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey and Abbey House dates largely to the late medieval period, although the gateway on Chilkwell Street is primarily 19th century and incorporates earlier medieval fabric. The wall runs along the south side of Silver Street, turning at right angles to run along the west side of Chilkwell Street.

The structure is said to be largely the original perimeter wall of the Abbey precinct. Sections of the stonework show considerable disturbance. The Chilkwell Street gateway features a large four-centred archway with a small window above and buttresses with set-offs to each end. Four medieval carved panels are set above the archway, with two visible from the interior; these include depictions of the Pelican in her Piety and St Joseph's cruet. A fragment of wall stands to its original height against the north side of the gateway. The section of wall running north steps down to approximately 7/8 feet in height, constructed of random freestone blocks with concrete coping. On Silver Street, the wall retains the jambs and voussoirs of a small, blocked four-centred archway. North of Abbey House, the wall rises abruptly to approximately 12 feet and is much disturbed, culminating in a late medieval buttress with a single set-off and chamfered plinth. This buttress also marks the end of a section of masonry blocks running south, forming a right angle to the street, with a crenellated section at its south end. The wall on Silver Street continues for a further distance at a lower height of approximately 8 feet.

South of the Chilkwell Street gateway, the wall is approximately 10 feet high and is believed to retain its original height in places. A short section of original coping survives, with concrete replacing it further south. The wall is of random rubble, partly coursed, and exhibits considerable irregularities, lessening in height before turning west away from Chilkwell Street. It continues, largely rebuilt, along the backs of houses at Bere Lane before reaching Friar's Hill, where stones are set on end along the top.

The wall forms part of a group of structures that includes Abbey House, Glastonbury Abbey, and the listed buildings from numbers 3 to 17 (inclusive) on the northeast side of Chilkwell Street.
