Description
Exe Bridge is a road bridge over the River Exe, located on the county boundary. It was built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier bridge. The bridge was repaired in 1929 by John Stone and altered around 1853. The parapets were rebuilt or extended in the mid to late 20th century. The structure is made of random rubble local stone, with voussoirs and saddleback coping of slate stone set on end. It features a three-arch span with semi-circular headed arches and a low pointed cutwater on the downstream side, set on raised plinths on the upstream side. The parapet continues as a wall for about 25 meters and 16 meters respectively on the north bank (Somerset) and south bank (Devon), with the parapet continuing as a wall for 19 meters and 28 meters respectively; the coping was renewed in the 20th century.
