Description
The Town Hall, built in 1818, is a two-storey late Georgian building with an ashlar front. The central three-window section projects forward and is topped by a triangular pediment. It features a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a stringcourse. The ground floor is adorned with banded rustication and includes five round-headed openings with keystones and a stringcourse at the impost level. The five windows above are sashes set in plain reveals with thin glazing bars. There are entrances on the left and right, each with semi-circular traceried fanlights and double doors that have two panels each. In front of the building, there is a low ashlar wall with coping and a plinth, flanked by paired piers that lead up to steps. The Town Hall, along with St Dunstan's House, Abbey Gatehouse, and Nos 6 to 9 Market Place, forms a significant group of buildings.
