Description
Norman Cottage is a house and workshops located on Church Street in Minehead. It dates from the 18th century and was remodeled in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubblestone, rendered and painted at the front, with a crested slate roof that was formerly thatched. It features brick stacks on the left gable end and at the rear. The layout consists of a 2-unit through-passage plan, with the service area to the left of the hall/kitchen, which has a rear lateral stack. There is an outshut at the back, along with 19th-century pantiled and 20th-century slated lean-to wings on the right.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The central door is a six-panelled design with glazing at the top, flanked by plain pilasters that support shaped consoles and a pediment. The windows are two-light casements with segmental arches. The front screen wall of the 19th-century lean-to has a parapet that is lower than the eaves, topped with pantile coping, and a 20th-century lean-to behind it completes the rectangle. The gable on the right side shows that the height and pitch of the roof have been altered.
Inside, the central passage curves back to the left, and there are axial beams along with a former open fire that has a timber lintel, now enclosed, located at the rear right.
