Description
The Summerhouse at the Language Centre is a small rectangular timber-framed building, likely dating from the late 19th century. It is set back from Staplegrove Road and was originally the summerhouse for Nos 86 to 90 (even), now attached to the Language Centre. The building has two storeys and features a lantern that rises from the roof, adorned with cresting and a weathervane. The exterior has whitewashed walls with black timberwork and decorative tile roofs. The lantern contains fixed diamond leaded lights in a wooden frame. Above the first-floor windows are gablets with facing tiles, and paired casements that hold panels of painted glass. The ground floor has been modernised, and there is a lean-to extension on the right side. Inside on the first floor, there is a wood-lined room with walls that slope up to the lantern. The four lights facing west contain excellent roundels of painted glass, depicting the heads and attributes of the four seasons, which are likely by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. The building is noted for the quality of its glass. The Summerhouse, along with Nos 86 to 90, The Cottage, and the Swiss Cottage in Linden Grove, forms a group with Weir House, Weir Lodge, and the gatepiers.
