Description
The farm buildings located to the northwest of Burlinghams Farmhouse date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of English garden wall bond brick, featuring limestone quoins and footings, with a tipped plain tile roof that has a stone slate lower course. The buildings are arranged in a U-shape around a yard that faces east, with shelter sheds and a fodder room located to the southwest.
The structure is single-storey, with the east elevation comprising six bays, while the north and south-facing elevations each have three bays, all supported by square-section piers. There is a similar two-bay entry to the fodder room. The west elevation includes two doorways that provide direct access to the pasture.
Inside, the building features a collar-truss roof with pegged principals, tusk tenons to the purlins, and nailed collars. It is likely that the roof was renewed in 1838 when Burlinghams Farmhouse was made "very convenient" and the buildings were described as "very perfect." These farm buildings were constructed shortly after the enclosure of the parish in 1796 and were specifically designed to accommodate fattening cattle, taking advantage of some of the best fattening and grazing land in 19th century Somerset.
