Description
Pill Bridge is a 17th-century pack horse bridge located on Pill Bridge Lane in Ilchester. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared. The bridge features three semi-circular arches spanning the River Ivel and is only 1.3 metres wide between its high parapets, supported by two piers on each side. The first recorded bridge on this site dates back to the early 13th century and served as part of the medieval route to Long Sutton and Langport, which is now an overgrown green lane. A warehouse was documented nearby in 1699, along with a toll house that remained in existence until 1805. Pill Bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No. 186).
