Description
Knole Cottage is a detached cottage dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, with later alterations. It is located on the south side of Knole Causeway in Long Sutton. The cottage is constructed of local lias stone, cut and squared, with a thatched roof featuring plain gables and reconstructed stone end chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high, comprising four bays, with the two western bays being later additions. The two western bays have casement windows – a four-light window below and a five-light window above, of early design, with leaded upper windows. Bays three and four have 20th-century sash-pane casements, and a French window is located in the lower bay of number three. A raked buttress is situated between bays one and two, followed by a boarded door set within an early triangular-arched heavy timber frame. The interior, while not inspected, is reported to include a cambered-arched internal doorway, wide fireplaces, a hall with a four-bay moulded beam ceiling, a relocated plank and muntin partition, and a spiral stone staircase.
