Description
Sock Dennis Farm House is a detached farmhouse dated 1723, which was reshaped in the early 19th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with Ham stone and Portland stone dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and features coped gables, along with ashlar chimney stacks that have moulded caps. The building has a double roof plan and is two storeys high with an attic, presenting a three-bay south elevation.
The outer bays contain 16-pane sash windows with Ham stone cills and false keystoned lias lintels. The centre upper bay features a 20-pane window with a semi-circular head and a matching lias stone arch. Below this is a part-glazed door situated in an open stone porch made of Portland stone, which is supported by Doric columns and pilasters, topped with a plain entablature and a flat roof.
The east gable is plain, while the west gable has two 16-pane sash windows in the attic, each with keystoned Ham lintels. There is a central lead downpipe with a stackhead dated 1723, and a central closed stone porch with a stone slate roof, plain side windows, and a Regency pattern six-panel inner door, along with a small 20th-century window to the left.
On the north elevation, there are two bays with 16-pane sash windows above, and 18th-century hollow-chamfered mullioned windows set in wave mould recesses. These windows have no labels and feature three-centre arched lights with incised spandrils. The interior has not been seen.
About 4 metres north of the house, there is a 32-metre length of stone plank walling that has an angled return to a barn, which adds to the setting of the house. Sock Dennis was recognized as an early separate settlement by at least the 13th century.
