Description

No. 4 West Street is an early 19th-century cottage in a row. Constructed of brick in an English garden wall bond, the exterior is colourwashed, with a plain clay tiled roof and a brick chimney stack. The cottage is two storeys and two bays wide. The upper floor features 16-pane horizontal-sliding sash windows. The lower floor has a 20-pane vertically sliding sash window under a false keystoned lintol in the second bay, and a Regency pattern six-panel door with two toplights, set in an architrave under a moulded flat stone hood on shaped brackets, in the first bay. To the left of the door is a small three-centre-arched passageway featuring a deep lintol with a false keystone. The interior has not been inspected. The cottages were built along this side of the road in or soon after 1820, and No. 4 is believed to be part of the last group to be constructed.
