Description

ST4916 MONTACUTE CP MIDDLE STREET (South side) 8/156 Medieval stone feature in churchyard, about 17 metres: south of nave, Church of St. Catherine - GV II Base of font or pulpit. Possibly C14. Ham stone. An irregular octagon on plan, 2 panelled faces being longer than the remainder: simple octagonal plinth, then angled underbowl with a traceried panel to each underface, and on top an oval bowl with drain hole. Presumably dither the font or the pulpit replaced during the 1870-71 restoration of the Church (q.v) - whichever it is, the plan form is unusual in this area, (VCH, vol 111 1974).
