Description
This is a boiler chimney, dating to approximately 1855, and located at Carey's Mill, attached to the south side of the Parrett Iron Works. It was built using ham stone, which is significantly eroded near the top. The chimney has a square plan, measuring roughly 2 metres wide at its base. It is divided into three stages. The lowest stage, approximately 10 metres high, is mostly plain but features a low arched opening on the south-east side, now blocked, and an arched soot door on the north-east side. An arched link connects it to the boilerhouse on the south-west side, though the boilerhouse has been substantially altered. A string course runs along the top of this stage. The second stage is approximately 8 metres high with two long, semi-circular recessed panels on each face. It is topped by a double string course, the upper of which has dentil details. The uppermost stage, about 6 metres high, incorporates three semi-circular arched panels on each face, supported by impost blocks. A dentilled cornice of considerable projection is positioned above, with angled flaunching to the capping. The chimney is part of the Parrett Iron Works, founded around 1855 on the site of earlier water mills.
