Description

Grey Gables is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th or early 17th century, including a carved date stone from 1671. The building is constructed of random rubble and features a thatched roof with coped verges, along with two rendered and one brick chimney stack. Originally an open hall house, it was later modified into a three-unit and cross-passage plan, with further internal rearrangements in the 18th century.

The house is single storey with an attic and has a façade that consists of three bays on the left and one on the right. It features three and four-light ovolo-moulded stone mullioned windows beneath stopped labels, including four-light windows with a central king mullion. The first floor has three front-facing gabled dormers with copings and pierced finials, while the right bay projects as a wing with a front-facing gable, also topped with a pierced finial. All windows are fitted with leaded lights and iron stanchions, and there is a decorative iron quadrant on the first floor.

The door opening is located in the second bay from the left and is framed by a chamfered four-centred stone surround, leading to a studded plank door with fine iron strap hinges. Inside, the house features exposed ceiling beams, several 17th-century doors and door surrounds, a small 17th-century staircase with splat balusters and pierced finials, and a fireplace on the left side of the ground floor with a moulded four-centred head stone surround. There is a single storey outshut to the left, but it is not considered of special interest.
