24.3.61

Barn. Cl6 origins. Local stone rubble with ashlar dressings; half hipped plain clay tile roof. 5 bays, with extension as long again to North East. On South East side 3 offset buttresses between bays, (that between bays 1 and 2 removed and small window inserted), slit windows bays 1 and 5, smalll doorway bay 3. On North West side tall central doorway with flat chamfered timber lintel, corner buttresses and half height buttresses on either side of doorway. Roof structure uses double collar trusses. Extension has catslide roof to South East over plain doors and windows; on North West side a C20 lean-to then large doorway at first floor level. Said to have been a tithe barn of Bruton Abbey, the barn became part of the estate of North Court; traditional connection with an old church not established but apparently church services were held in the barn until the 1940's. (Couzens, P, Bruton in Selwood, Abbey Press, Sherborne, 1972).
