Description
This barn, located about 30 metres east of Nos 15 and 16 High Street, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of local stone that has been cut and squared, with ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with clay pantiles and features coped gables with finials. The barn consists of four bays.
The first bay has a wide three-centre arch that is voussoired and includes a keystone. The second bay features a thin ventilation slit. The third bay has a very tall semi-circular voussoired arch with double doors that have wicket gates, and this arch is also keystoned with impost blocks. Above this is a gable that contains a stone with the initials C.D., commemorating C. Dickinson, who died in 1783. The fourth bay has a lower wing that projects westwards.
This barn was formerly part of a farm unit, of which The Gate House was the farmhouse, although The Gate House has been substantially altered and is not of special interest.
