Description

Kingsdon Manor School is a large detached house dating to around 1830. It was rebuilt on a new site for C.A. Moody and was possibly designed by William Wilkins. The building is constructed of local lias stone with Ham stone dressings, and has Welsh slate roofs behind parapets and pediments, with stone chimney stacks. The west elevation has nine bays, with bays one, two, eight, and nine projecting as two-storey wings. The design incorporates band courses, cornices, and plain parapets. Windows are sash windows in plain openings with voussoired flat arches. The outer bays have angled bay windows with four, twelve, and four panes, with corner pilasters, a plain entablature, and a flat roof. Upper floors and the central bay on the first floor have nine-pane sashes, and the central bay on the ground floor has a large, studded eight-panel door in an eared architrave, with a two-panel blind section above. A balustraded parapet sits atop the central five bays, and an Ionic portico with a plain entablature and flat roof spans the ground floor between the projecting bays. The other elevations are similar in design. The interior has not been inspected. Modern extensions to the north and north-east are not of significant interest. Since 1948, the building has housed a school for boys with disabilities, operated by the Bristol Education Authority.
