Description
Oak Cottage is a semi-detached cottage dating from the early 17th century, with some modifications. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a thatched roof featuring coped gables and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays. The windows are leaded casements of three lights, all of which are 20th-century replacements, and are set under timber lintels. The entrance door is located in the lower bay of the second section.
On the west gable, there is a small two-light mullioned window with remnants of a lias stone label, next to a low two-storey extension that has a half-hipped roof covered with double Roman clay tiles. The rear of the cottage has an outshut and other additions. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to feature a cross passage with a two-room plan, including one room with a stud and panel partition and another with an in-and-out plank partition. The west room has a four-panel ceiling with plain chamfered beams, a gable fireplace, and a circular staircase alongside it. The beams and fireplace in the east room have scroll stop chamfers, and there is a brick-lined oven in that room as well. The roof structure consists of collar beam trusses.
