Description

Stoneleigh Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with possible earlier elements and later alterations. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a thatched roof featuring stepped coped gables and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and consists of five bays, with the fourth bay being a single bay projecting wing. The windows are 20th-century leaded casements set under renewed timber lintels; all are two-light except for the lower bay one and both levels of bay five, which are three-light. There is no window in the lower bay two, and the lower bay three features a studded boarded door in a heavy frame, accompanied by a 20th-century open timber and tiled porch.

Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a three-room cross passage plan with variations. The west kitchen includes a spiral stair in the north-west corner, remnants of two ovens, and a bacon curing chamber. The interior also has various stop-chamfered beams with stepped run-out stops, and internal partitions made of close slender studs, straw, and plaster, likely from the 18th century. The roof structure includes collar and tie trusses, with one truss dated 1718. There are indications of a fire in the 18th century, as evidenced by many smoke-blackened timbers, which necessitated major repairs. A long outbuilding extends from the north-west corner of the farmhouse.
