Description
The Minehead War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1921. It is made of carved granite and is prominently located at the top of St Michael’s Hill. The memorial features a Celtic-style wheel cross atop a tall shaft, which stands on a rectangular plinth that rests on a square three-stepped base. The front (east) face of the plinth has an inscription in black painted lettering that reads: IN/ EVERLASTING/ MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ MINEHEAD/ WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918. The names of those who fell are recorded on the north, west, and east faces of the memorial. After the Second World War, a stone bench was added to the south side of the base, with its back inscribed with the names of the Fallen.
