Description

Joylers Mill and Mill House is a mill and mill house located on Mill Lane in South Petherton. The mill is recorded as early as 1313, with the current structure dating from the early 19th century, while the house was built in the late 19th century. The mill is constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings, topped with a clay pantiled roof over stone slate base courses, featuring stepped coped gables. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and has four bays with irregular window arrangements. The mill features chamfer-mullioned windows with two lights, located on the second floor of bay 2, the first floor of bays 1 and 3, and the ground floor of bays 1, 2, and 3. There are double doors in a plain chamfered opening with a heavy lintel between bays 1 and 2, and another pair of doors in bay 2 on the first floor. Bay 4 has a projecting timber and corrugated iron structure that is two storeys higher, cantilevered to protect a drive shaft, and to the left is a semi-circular arched doorway leading into the waterwheel well, where the wheel and much of the machinery remain in place.

Attached to the east gable is a later single-storey building that matches the mill, while to the west is a two-storey link to the house, featuring a double Roman clay tiled roof and doors at both levels, with the lower door being segmental-arched. The house has a stone plinth and is built of red brick in stretcher bond, with yellow brick window arches and an upper band course. It has an overhanging gabled Welsh slate roof and brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys tall with three bays, featuring casement windows with segmental arched heads and a doorway in the lower bay 2 that matches, along with a verandah along the front. The mill wheel is undershot and assisted by a small turbine; however, the leat has now been filled in, and milling ceased around 1930.
