Description
12 and 14 Roundwell Street are a pair of cottages, probably from the 18th century. They are built from coursed ham stone rubble and have a thatched roof with a plain gable at the east end and stepped coping at the west. The cottages are single-storey with an attic and consist of four bays.
The windows are plain casements under timber lintels, featuring a 20th-century pattern. Bays 1 and 2 have toplights, and there is a matching window set into the thatch above bay 2. Bay 4 contains a small three-light horizontal-bar casement, with a corresponding window set into the thatch over bay 3. These windows have iron-framed opening lights. In the lower part of bay 3, there is a pair of simple doors separated by a brick pier, also under a timber lintel, with a setback in the masonry to the right of bay 4.
The east gable has 20th-century casement windows, while the west gable may be a remnant of earlier work, featuring cut and squared stonework with a two-light hollow-chamfered mullioned window in a chamfered recess with a label on the first floor. There is a single-storey extension at the rear. The interior has not been seen but is believed to be little altered, despite the later windows in number 14.
