Description

This is an early 19th-century house with a shop. It is located on the east side of St James's Street, South Petherton. The front facade is constructed of ashlar ham stone, while the sides and rear are of coursed rubble. The steeply pitched roof is covered in Welsh slate and features stepped coped gables and stone and brick chimney stacks.

The building is two storeys high with attics, and has four bays. A plinth runs along the base. The original 12-pane sash windows are set in plain openings with voussoired heads. A later 19th-century shopfront occupies the lower two bays, featuring four-light windows with three-centre arched heads and acanthus decoration. The shopfront includes a recessed pair of glazed doors with a shaped fanlight above, flanked by slim panelled pilasters and a fascia supported by corbel brackets. The lower bay of the right-hand side has a three-fielded-panel door, approached by three steps, set within a semi-circular arch with a radially glazed fanlight. A chamfer-mullioned window is located high in the south gable. A two-light attic window with three-centre arched lights is visible in the north gable, which has a splayed rear corner. The interior has not been inspected.
