Description

The lime kiln is a 19th-century industrial structure located in Vallis Vale, Great Elm. It is a large cylindrical building, standing 15 metres high, constructed of random rubble. At the base, there is an opening that leads to a narrow entrance situated one metre above the ground. The land rises steeply behind the kiln. The chimney has been blocked with rubble, leaving only a slight depression in the ground at the top of the kiln as evidence of its presence. This kiln is one of a pair located approximately 30 metres apart and represents one of the few early industrial remains in this historically active valley.
