Description

The building is a country house dating to 1840, designed by James Wilson of Bath for Thomas Fussell. It is constructed of Bath stone ashlar, with a slate roof and ashlar stacks featuring elaborate caps, some paired and connected by a small semi-circular arch, with wide bracketed eaves. The design is of an irregular plan in the Italianate style. The house has two storeys, with a 1:3:1 bay arrangement; the left bay is slightly set forward and features paired semi-circular head sash windows with marginal lights in stone surrounds to the first floor, below a large semi-circular headed niche. The central three bays have casements within segmental headed recesses on the first floor, and sash windows with glazing bars in deep semi-circular headed recesses with moulded voussoirs below. The right bay, also slightly set forward, is a three-storey tower with sash windows in similar openings. The third storey is set back slightly behind a moulded band and features triple semi-circular headed openings, one blank, one with a sash window with marginal glazing bars. A broad bracketed cornice sits above the main house, surmounted by a pierced parapet. The central door is within a deep semi-circular headed recess, with double panelled doors with studding and a fanlight with glazing bars above. A projecting carriage porch extends from the centre of the building, with Ionic pilasters, paired on each side supporting three segmental headed openings with fluted keystones and topped by a dentillated cornice and blocking course. A wall to the left encloses a courtyard, built of squared and coursed Doulting stone with a moulded coping. It features a pair of ashlar gate piers with moulded pyramidal cappings, a doorway with a moulded hood on brackets, and a plank door. The interior contains contemporary plasterwork and fireplaces to the ground floor rooms.
