Description

Box Bush Cottage is a house that is attached to the rear of No. 25 and was formerly part of it. The building is constructed from rubble and has a pantile roof. It features some internal elements from the 17th century and was refronted in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with substantial restoration carried out in the late 20th century. The layout consists of a two-room single-depth plan with a central staircase and a symmetrical front.

The exterior has two storeys and an attic, with three windows. There are two replacement sash windows with twelve panes flanking a blind opening above a flat canted bay, and a sixteen-pane sash window with a central part-glazed door from the 19th century.

Inside, the ground floor retains three rough deep-chamfered beams, and the room to the left features a deep niche, which may have been a former window opening. The renewed winder staircase includes a part-glazed screen that was removed from a chapel on Union Street. At the top of the stairs, there is an 18th-century fielded three-panel door. The first floor has a small bressumer fireplace with a segmental head and stopped ends, along with more rough beams. The upper winder stair is of early fabric, and the three-bay roof has heavy tie-beams supported by late 20th-century steel props, along with one purlin.
