Description
Mells Down Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century. It is constructed from squared and coursed Doulting rubble and features coped verges on kneelers, along with end rubble stacks. The building has an "E"-plan and a symmetrical facade, standing two storeys high with an attic and five bays. The stone mullioned windows include two-light windows on the first floor with bead mouldings, and deeper two-light openings below with ovolo mouldings, except for the central window, which is a three-light design. There are door openings on each side; to the left is a 19th-century half-glazed door set in a chamfered stone surround, accompanied by an open hipped-roof porch supported by square wooden pillars. The door opening to the right features a 17th-century studded plank door in a similar surround. At the rear, there is a gabled stair turret with a two-light reserved chamfer mullion and transom window. Inside, the right-hand room on the ground floor boasts a particularly fine 17th-century stone fireplace, which includes a moulded mantle shelf supported by two shafts that spring from semi-octagonal bases, a decorative panel with quatrefoils directly below, and an edge roll moulding around the hearth opening, complete with a stone hearth.
